Christoph Chwatal is an art historian and critic based in Vienna and Berlin.
Currently, Christoph is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the NOMIS Foundation-funded research project “Site Complexes: Models of Responsive Practices for the 21st Century” (University of Vienna/Berlin University of the Arts). In 2023 and 2024, he was a Lecturer in Contemporary Art History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. In Summer 2024, he held a Juliane and Franz Roh Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern and Contemporary Art at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, Munich.
Christoph completed his Ph.D. dissertation on “Contemporary Art’s Strategic-Organizational Complex” through a joint doctoral program in Cologne and Amsterdam. During his Ph.D., Christoph was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions-funded Fellow at the Graduate School for the Humanities of the University of Cologne, an Affiliated Researcher at the Department of Art History at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, holder of a scholarship by the Stiftung Mercator, and a Lecturer at the Berlin University of the Arts.
His academic writings have been featured in various journals, including Stedelijk Studies, kritische berichte, and Third Text. As an art critic, he regularly contributes to publications such as Art Papers, springerin, and Texte zur Kunst.
